What is Failover Monitoring?
Automatic monitoring and backup for maximum uptime
Failover monitoring is like an automatic bodyguard for your website. Our system constantly checks if your server is online (every 1-5 minutes). If your primary server goes down, DNS automatically switches to your backup server in under 1 minute. Your visitors experience no downtime - they're simply automatically sent to your functioning backup. This is critical for webshops, business websites and any site where uptime means money.
How does it work?
Constant Monitoring
We check your server every minute with HTTP/HTTPS, PING or TCP checks
Automatic Detection
If check fails 3 times in a row, failover is activated automatically
Instant Failover
DNS is updated to point to your backup server (under 60 seconds)
Smart Recovery
When primary server is back, DNS automatically switches back
Notifications
You receive notifications via email/SMS when failover is activated

Frequently asked questions about DNS
Everything you need to know about DNS and failover monitoring
What is DNS and why is it important?
DNS (Domain Name System) translates your domain name to an IP address. It's the foundation of how the internet works - without DNS, no one could find your website. Fast and reliable DNS is critical for your website's performance and uptime.
Why upgrade from free DNS?
Free DNS works fine for simple websites, but lacks failover monitoring. If your server goes down, your site is offline until you manually fix it. Premium DNS monitors constantly and automatically switches to backup, so you avoid downtime and lost revenue.
How many failover monitors do I need?
It depends on how many services you want to monitor. If you have one website, 1 monitor is enough (DNS Standard). If you have multiple sites, multiple servers or redundant setups, you need more monitors. Business and Enterprise packages suit companies with critical infrastructures.
How fast does failover work?
Our system checks your server every 1-5 minutes. On failure, failover is activated automatically after 3 failed checks (approx. 3-5 minutes total). DNS update happens in under 60 seconds, so total downtime is minimal compared to hours without monitoring.
Can I change package later?
Yes, you can always upgrade to a larger package with more monitors. Downgrade is also possible at next billing period. We recommend starting with DNS Standard and upgrading when you need more monitors.
What happens if my server goes down without failover?
Without failover monitoring, your website is simply offline until you discover the problem and manually switch DNS to a backup server. This can take hours or even days before you notice, meaning lost revenue, frustrated customers and poor SEO ranking.
How do I set up failover monitoring?
It's super simple. In the DNS control panel you choose which record to monitor, specify your primary and backup IP address, and select monitoring type (HTTP/HTTPS/PING). The system automatically starts monitoring within a few minutes.
What's the difference between monitoring types?
HTTP/HTTPS checks if your web server responds to web requests (perfect for websites). PING checks if the server is online at all (basic check). TCP checks specific ports (good for mail servers, databases etc). Higher packages provide access to more monitoring types.
Is DNS hosting the same as web hosting?
No, DNS hosting is only domain resolution (translation from name to IP). Web hosting is where your files are stored. You need both. Our DNS hosting can be used with any web hosting provider, giving you flexibility.
Where are your DNS servers located?
We have 50+ DNS servers spread globally across all continents. This Anycast network ensures DNS queries are answered from the nearest server to your visitors, providing minimal latency and maximum speed regardless of where in the world they are.
